The first step in balloon placement consists of the patient swallowing a small capsule-shaped device. It has a catheter attached.
The second step consist of providing up to 550 milliliters of liquid made up of amino acids through the catheter, thus allowing the balloon to inflate once it is inside the stomach.
In the third step, the doctor proceeds to remove the catheter.
As far as the balloon removal procedure is concerned, it is simple. After about 16 weeks; the balloon deflates spontaneously through a built-in valve, and is expelled through the gastrointestinal tract (hence, it is also known as a balloon to be swallowed and excrete).
